Last year we joined in the festivities with thousands of sunburnt Finns at a rock concert at Kalasatama. This year, we will still have to decide where we’ll be going to celebrate Helsinki week and Helsinki day. Maybe we’ll go dancing at city hall and have our photo taken in Vitorian period garb. You can even go for cruise aboard a historic sailing ship! There is plenty more information on the beautifully designed Helsinkiviikko website (in English too).

About 2 weekends ago, we visited on of the local museum exhibitions that forms part of these celebrations. We went to the “A place with a view” exhibition at Sederholm house museum in Aleksanterinkatu. It was an interesting look at the lives of resients in the very modernist suburban housing project in Pihlajamäki. When looking for accomodation last year, we had a look at one apartment there. I must admit that I found the architecture a bit dismal at the time but this exhibition has changed my mind about the whole area. The exhibition features photographs of people and families in their own apartments which is supplemented with a short write up of their stories.
