One sign of Christmas approaching in Finland is the appearance of tähtitorttu (= star + pastry / tart). The tähtitorttut (plural) are made from puff pastry, with a dab of plum jam in the centre (hence their alternative name = luumu [= plum] torttu).

Crafting the tähtitorttu

We were able to fold our own tähtitorttu recently when visiting Miska and his family – and had to make the difficult choice of whether the plum jam goes under or on top of the folded pastry tips. Light and tasty, I’d not mind munching on a few more Christmas “stars”.

Baked until golden brown!
