A walk south of Viikki: Fastholma

Needing some greenness a few weeks ago, Brigitte and I caught the Metro to Herttoniemi. Instead of going towards Kivinoka (like we did with Jesse – you can see the photos here), we headed north towards Viiki.

The "upper" path north of Hierttoniemi - the gnarled pine trees looked great.

We found the “green” we were looking for – and my first mosquito bites for the summer. These Helsinki mozzies can really bite! We ended up walking to the bird tower at Fastholma – the weather was a bit too windy for birding, but the views were great.

One of the more unique things that we saw was one of Helsinki’s snow dumps – the piles were still 10 m high!

We returned to the Metro station through part of the Hierttoniemi residential area. Two things caught my eye – a really creative advert for a driving school, and an advert showing a magazine cover that included an line about “delicious African braai’s and the dream life on a game farm”. So, don’t forget how special living in Africa is!
